Unified Enhanced Conversion Settings: A Practical Google Ads Audit

An enabled conversion setting does not prove that useful conversion data is arriving. Google’s v26 release changes how unified enhanced-conversion configuration is exposed. Use the update to review configuration, event delivery and business meaning as separate layers.

What changed in the API announcement

Google announced account fields Customer.enablement_setting and Customer.effective_enablement_setting for unified enhanced-conversion configuration, replacing an older leads-enabled field. [1] Integration owners should check the current versioned reference and release notes before updating a query or interpreting a returned value.

For marketers, the practical lesson is to avoid treating one legacy boolean as a complete health report. A setting describes configuration. It does not, by itself, demonstrate successful collection, correct matching, useful optimization or improved revenue.

Review configuration, delivery and meaning separately

Use three questions. Is the intended configuration in place? Is the implementation sending the expected eligible data successfully? Does the underlying action represent the business outcome the campaign should optimize? Assign an evidence source and owner to each answer.

This separation catches problems a single green status can hide. A working event can represent the wrong step in the funnel. A correct setting can coexist with a broken implementation. A reliable implementation can still be too recent or too sparse to justify a performance conclusion.

Start with one known conversion

Choose a real, authorized test or a recent business record that the implementation owner can trace. Confirm the action, timestamp, destination and expected event path without exposing personal customer data in a public report. Compare the business record with the implementation’s accepted-event evidence and native diagnostics.

Do not ask an AI assistant to infer a successful upload merely because the website displayed a success message. Keep the outcome record and transport evidence distinct. If access to diagnostics is unavailable, say the collection layer remains unverified.

Check the bidding outcome as well as the tag

Review which conversion goals the campaign uses and whether the actions are primary, secondary or included in a custom goal. Google documents that secondary actions in a custom goal can still be used for bidding. [2] A naming label alone does not establish what optimization is doing.

For a lead business, reconcile the chosen action with qualified leads or sales where those records exist. More recorded form events can coexist with worse commercial performance. The audit should not reward the implementation simply for generating a larger number in a conversion column.

A three-layer diagnostic record

A hypothetical client has enhanced conversion settings enabled and sees a jump in reported actions. The implementation owner discovers the event fires on a form start rather than completion. The setting can be enabled and transport can work while the business interpretation remains wrong. Correct the definition with the responsible owner, preserve the change date and compare a consistent outcome. Reporting more actions is not, by itself, proof that the implementation created more customers.

Keep a before-and-after measurement record

Record the implementation release date, relevant account configuration, conversion definitions and comparable observation windows. Preserve changes in offer, website, consent experience and advertising spend. If several factors changed together, the analysis needs to acknowledge them.

Our suggested audit output is a short ledger: confirmed, not confirmed, owner and next check. Avoid marking the entire account “fixed” while one critical layer remains untested. A partial verification can still be valuable when it makes the unresolved work concrete.

Use 1ClickReport for business reconciliation

Ask the Analyst to compare connected campaign outcomes and website events for the same client and dates. Provide the implementation evidence or native export when it is not available through a connector. The assistant can help explain discrepancies, but missing diagnostic access should remain visible.

The result should name the next action precisely: verify an upload, correct an event definition, inspect campaign goals or gather more mature outcomes. Changing a setting without knowing which layer failed may produce a new configuration while leaving the original business problem untouched.

A first task to try

Prepare an enhanced-conversion audit for this client. Separate configuration, event delivery and business outcome quality. Compare connected Ads and analytics evidence over matching dates. List diagnostics requiring native access and review primary, secondary and custom-goal usage before recommending a change.

Questions readers ask

Does enabled mean conversion tracking is healthy?

No. Verify event delivery, definitions and the business outcome separately.

Should I change the settings immediately?

First establish the current implementation and the specific failure. A configuration change is not a substitute for a traceable test.
